Chief Eric Smith

Chief Eric D. Smith has served Orlando since 1994 in various leadership roles. He credits his experience with our internationally recognized SWAT team for preparing him to be the law enforcement leader he is today.

Chief Smith believes law enforcement is responsible for building trusting relationships with the community and is proud to serve as the 40th Chief of the Orlando Police Department.

Chief Smith is a former SWAT Commander and served on both K-9 and undercover drug units. As a member of the Metropolitan Bureau of Investigations team (a multi-jurisdictional task force), Smith led countless drug enforcement operations.

Smith has extensive experience with planning and leading large-scale operations and highly attended events. With more than twenty years of experience in high-risk and high liability tactical operations and incidents, Smith has proven himself to be a decisive leader.

Smith is an established published speaker who presents locally, nationally, and internationally. His knowledge, experience, dynamic approach, and leadership have earned him many accolades and awards.

Chief Eric Smith has a bachelor’s degree from the University of Central Florida, a master’s degree from the University of Oklahoma, and completed the Federal Bureau of Investigations National Academy Session #269.
